CONSERVATION EDUCATION

The Prince William Soil & Water Conservation District develops and presents programs to youths and adults on soil, water, wetlands, agriculture, and general conservation.

Library of Conservation Education Resources

Lesson plans, information and background material, videos, slide programs, computer software, and audio cassettes are in the library and available to all teachers.

3 High School Students (2 from Osbourn Park High School and 1 from Manassas Osbourn High School will be sponsored by PWSWCD at the VASWCD Youth Conservation Camp this summer.


Region II Envirothon at Montpelier. Prince William's team placed 4th, 11 points behind the third place team. The top three teams go on to the state competion.




Osbourn Park High School summer intern program will include opportunities to join the Adopt-A-Stream Program and visit Dutchland Farm (dairy).
Teachers Training 64 teachers attended training in activities and resources for SOLs related to ponds, forestry, wetlands and watersheds. Posters, sources of free or inexpensive multimedia resources, Watershed Connections activity books, PWC watershed maps.

Teachers' Newsletter

Newsletters were distributed monthly to Elementary, Middle and High School teachers

September, included "Natural Wonders in My Watershed" the Natural Resource Conservation Week poster contest theme.

October, teachers were encouraged to attend the AG in the Classroom and Watershed Model training sessions.

November, included an article on Osbourn Park High School students who have joined the Adopt-A-Stream program.

December, included an article on the District of the Year Award for Achievement in Education.

January, included articles on stream monitoring and Adopt-A-Stream programs.

February, announcements on the teacher workshop, Project WAVE and the Arbor Day Poster Contest.

March, Virginia Naturally 2000 (Governor Gilmore's Environmental Education Initiative), incorporating Arbor Day into the SOLs.

April, included Arbor Day Poster Contest winners, various Arbor Day ceremonies and their contribution to trees on public lands, including school sites.

May, focused on planning field trips and special events for next years' classes, including Farm Field Day and the Arbor Day Poster Contest.

Farm Field Day

Performance Goal: 1 event

Achieved: 1 event - 400 students

400 fourth grade students attended the October 6th program learning about the importance of agriculture in Prince William County. The event was open from 10:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m., and over 50 volunteers helped with the activities.
Natural Resource Conservation Week "Natural Wonders of My Watershed" poster contest awards ceremony was held at the Bull Run Regional Library on November 12th from 3:00 - 5:00 p.m.

Arbor Day Ceremonies

Performance Goal: 730 posters

Achieved: 804 posters

Winning posters were displayed at the McCoart building for the week of April 3-10 and at Leesylvania State Park's visitor center during the week of Potomac River Natural Heritage Day/PWSWCD's Arbor Day Ceremony.

A total of 1,391 attendees at 12 sites, from April 4th through May 6th, participated in the Arbor Month ceremonies throughout Prince William County and the Manassas City area.

You and Your Land - A homeowner guide to good land stewardship.

Citizen Stream Education Programs

Programs coordinated by the District include Adopt-A-Stream, Stream Stewards and Save Our Streams (stream monitoring).

Achieved: 161 participants



Streams include Neabsco Creek at Leesylvania State Park, Neabsco Creek at Cloverdale Park, Powells Creek at route 1, and the Potomac River at Leesylvania State Park.


4 groups are conducting stream clean-ups at least twice a year.

Farm Tour with Prince William Board of County Supervisors L. Ben Thompson and Ruth Griggs, County Executive Craig Gerhart and Dept. Of Public Works Director Bob Wilson. Toured 3 farms with BMPs installed: Macuci (beef cattle, horses), Carter (beef), Dusty Lane Farm (dairy).

AGRICULTURAL CONSERVATION

The Prince William Soil & Water Conservation District develops Soil & Water Quality Conservation Plans, administers the Virginia Agricultural Best Management Practices Cost-Share Program, and addresses urban NPS pollution and the increasing number of horse farm owners in the county.

The Tributary Strategy nutrient reduction goals were achieved in the second quarter of FY2000 for completed and approved BMPs:

Urban NPS Reduction Activities

E&S Plan reviews for City of Manassas, towns of Dumfries, Haymarket, Occoquan, and Quantico to insure that erosion plans and practices selected will provide necessary limitation on soil movement into streams.

Prince William Board of County Supervisors
Jamie Lawry, Stormwater Management (SWM) Engineer, DCR, Warrenton, provided new SWM Regulations which recommends designing SWM facilities to provide 24-hour extended-detention of the runoff from a 1-year frequencey storm as an alternative to the 2-year peak rate reduction required by Minimum Standard (MS)-19 of the Virginia Erosion & Sediment Control Regulations.

Equine and Agricultural Community Outreach

Efforts to make horse owners aware of our presence and of the availability of technical, financial and educational assistance. This group is growing in size in the county, and traditionally has not participated often with District programs.
The Prince William and John Marshall (Fauquier Co.) SWCDs and the Fauquier Cooperative Extension hosted a Dairy Farmer Dinner/Seminar to inform dairy farmers of environmental regulations coming into effect in the near future, how they would be affected and what they could do to comply. Approximately 50 farmers attended.

Prince William SWCD hosted the "Environmentally Sensitive Horsekeeping" seminar in April with 80 attendees resulting in 19 calls requesting technical assistance.

Developed a Manure Exchange Service within Prince William County.
